The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) today held the inaugural meeting of the Technical Committee established to develop the Ministry’s successor Strategic Plan for 2027–2031.
The meeting was attended by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez; Permanent Secretary Ms. Isatou Auber; Deputy Permanent Secretary, Technical, Dr. Samba Sowe; and Deputy Permanent Secretary, Administration and Finance, Mrs. Ndey Fatou Trawally.
The meeting also brought together senior officials and representatives from MoHERST, the University of The Gambia (UTG), the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), EUCLID University, and other key sector institutions.
The Technical Committee will lead the review of the Ministry’s 2021–2025 Strategic Plan and guide the development of a new five-year strategy that responds to emerging challenges and priorities in The Gambia’s higher education, research, science and technology sectors.
During its four-month mandate, the Committee will assess achievements and implementation gaps from the previous plan, undertake broad stakeholder consultations, review policy and strategic alignment, and develop strategic priorities, implementation mechanisms, financing and sustainability frameworks, as well as monitoring and evaluation systems.
The 2027–2031 Strategic Plan is expected to build on the gains of the previous strategy while strengthening access and equity, quality and relevance, infrastructure, research and innovation, financing, and sector management.
Professor Banna Sawaneh of the University of The Gambia serves as Chairperson, while the Directorate of Planning, Budget and Policy Analysis serves as the Secretariat. The Committee is expected to submit the final validated Strategic Plan to MoHERST at the end of its mandate.
The development of the successor strategy forms part of MoHERST’s efforts to ensure that the higher education, research, science and technology sectors remain aligned with national development priorities and emerging regional and global commitments.
